Manitoulin Fishing Districts

Manitoulin Island is blessed with being at the intersection of four different fishing Districts for Ontario, as follows:

  • District 15   Great La Cloche Island, Birch Island, and North Shore
  • District 17   North Channel (between Manitoulin Island & North Shore)
  • District 28   Manitoulin Island, Barrie Island, and Cockburn Island
  • District 35   Lake Huron (South Shore of Manitoulin Island)

These Districts include:

  • Two different deep, cold water lake areas (Lake Huron, and North Channel);
  • Deep & cold  inland lakes (Lake Kagawan);
  • Warmer, shallow inland lakes (Lake Mindemoya); and
  • Small streams with salmon and trout (Mindemoya River, Blue Jay Creek, Manitou River, Bass Creek, Kagawong River, etc.).

Manitoulin Fishing Seasons & Species

The most common species on Manitoulin's inland waters are largemouth bass, Smallmouth bass, Crappie, Muskellunge (Muskie), Yellow Perch, Northern Pike, Atlantic Salmon, Pacific Salmon (Chinook, Coho, and Pink), Sauger, Splake, Sturgeon, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Walleye, and Whitefish.  The following table gives you the open season for the various species of fish for District 28 (Manitoulin Island):
