BLACK'S BAY
Hunting & Fishing Camp
Manitoulin Island, Ont., Canada
Manitoulin has been a "closed club" for years now, requiring the permission
of the land owner to hunt. Now is your opportunity to learn what they've tried
to keep a secret for years.
The data presented in this report is taken from Ontario's Ministry of Natural
Resourses comprehensive report on Manitoulin Is. deer harvest of 1990.
This data is typical of the deer season each year. The deer harvest is
relatively stable on Manitoulin Is. As the expert hunters know, the deer depend
on vegetation, and it depends on rainfall. Being an island on one of the world's
largest bodies of fresh water helps keep the rain regular and consistent.
Droughts are short in duration or rare.
Black's Bay Hunting & Fishing Camp has planted a number of deer feeding areas
in cereals, clover, and other speciality plants loved by deer. These deer yards
feed them now, in the fall during the hunt, and through the long and cold
winter.
By supporting the deer through the winter, they reach their maximum weight
and growth. Only when the deer are at maximum health do the antlers reach their
full size. This is our aim at Black's Bay H & F Camp.
Ontario is divided up into about 75 different Wildlife Management Units (WMU's).
Black's Bay H & F Camp is located in WMU 43B in Campbell Township on Manitoulin
Island.
In the following pages, we have taken the Ministry's own data to show you why
Manitoulin Island, and especially WMU 43B is the best deer hunt in Ontario, if
not North America.
We hope this helps in your decision to hunt at Black's Bay. We look forward to having you visit us soon.
1. WHERE ARE THE DEER LOCATED ?
Based on the success of past hunting trips, we can tell where there the most
healthy populations of deer are located.
Wildlife Management Unit # 43B on the West Side of Manitoulin Island has the
second highest harvesting of deer in all of Ontario.
2. WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING ONE OF THOSE DEER IF I HUNT 43B?
Getting a deer depends on opportunity AND skill. If you have the
skill, 43B has the opportunities. You have better than a 50/50 chance of taking
home a deer in 43B.
The above graph shows most WMU's have a hunter success rate between 20% and
50%. In 1990, as in other years, WMU 43B has one of the best hunter success
rates in Ontario.
WMU 43B is better than 90% of all the other WMU's for the hunter's chance
of getting a deer.
3. 43B LOOKS GOOD, BUT AREN'T THERE OTHER AREAS CLOSER TO HOME THAT ARE
JUST AS GOOD?
WMU 63 (bottom right corner in above graph) has more deer, but your
odds of getting one of those deer drop close to 1 chance in 3.
One WMU area (top left corner in above graph) had a 94% success rate, but
only 15 deer were shot by 16 hunters. It is located well past Sudbury and even
more remote.
The best WMU is the one closest to the top right corner in the above graph.
This is where there are lots of deer available and you have an excellent chance
of getting one of them. Therefore, the best WMU in Ontario is WMU 43B on
Manitoulin Is. This is where Black's Bay Hunting & Fishing Camp is located.
WMU 43B has the second biggest deer harvest, but your chances in 43B are 39%
better at getting a deer than the #1 harvest area. Manitoulin's 43B is 8 hrs
away by car or 1 hr. by air. It is empty of pollution and full of plump deer.
4. WHAT ABOUT DOE TAGS? I WANT A TROPHY BUCK, BUT I'D RATHER HAVE A GOOD
EATING DOE THAN NOTHING.
In 1990, every hunter who asked for a doe tag in Manitoulin's 43B got one.
This is the case in 1994 as well, and most other years.
Some of the biggest trophies have been shot on Manitoulin. I've been after
the same huge, smart buck for the last 5 years. Eventually I'll get him. In the
mean time, I savor every meal of venison my family enjoys.

We limit the camp to a maximum of seven (7) hunters. To avoid disappointment, you need to book early.
