Light Pollution Levels on Manitoulin Island

Image of North America from the The World Atlas of the Artificial Night Sky Brightness.
Light pollution map for North and Central America, ranging from black (minimal light pollution), dark gray, blue, green yellow, red, and white (bright city illumination).  See colour scale below

For the USA, East of the Mississippi is one continuous urban area.

Only some small areas in the Appellation, Montana and the Rockies have totally black nights.

The Great Lakes region of Canada have similar light pollution levels.  However, Manitoulin is still blessed with dark skies.

Close-up satellite image (~250 km wide x 400 km high) of light pollution at Earth's surface around Manitoulin Island.   The segmented, straight white line is the US-Canadian border in the middle of Lake Huron.

Note the "black hole" of minimal light pollution in the middle of Lake Huron.

Geographical satellite image of Manitoulin with light pollution super-imposed.

White cross-hairs shows location of Black's Bay Lodge ("BBay") on South Shore of Manitoulin.  Small blue area to East BBay are a few streetlights in the Village of Providence Bay.

This map shows that there is minimal light pollution at BBay (Bortle Scale= 2), ensuring you excellent astronomy viewing conditions.

The only place with less light pollution is 75 km. off shore in the middle of Lake Huron.
